Description
In June of 1957, just days before Ralph Eubanks was born, Mississippi Governor James Coleman stepped before the television cameras of "Meet the Press" and was asked whether the public schools of Mississippi would ever be integrated. "Well, ever is a long time," he replied, "[but] I would say that a baby born in Mississippi today will never live long enough to see an integrated school."Eubanks's mother repeated these words on a cold January day in 1970 as she drove Ralph and his sisters to their first day in an integrated school deep in rural Mississippi. In this extraordinary personal pilgrimage, he recaptures the feel of growing up during this tumultuous time, and offers eloquent testimony to a family's grace and determination against all odds. While the Eubanks family home - an idyllic eighty-acre farm on the outskirts of town - kept them from much of the overt racism swirling around the countryside, an all-pervasive Southern climate of fear and suspicion made even small steps across the Jim Crow line a matter of life and death. Years later, Eubanks learned just how close his family came to crossing that line when he found his parents' names on a watch list created by the Sovereignty Commission, a state agency specifically created to maintain white supremacy. The declassification of these files in 1998 sends Eubanks on a remarkable journey of discovery, one that leads him not only to learn more about his own family, but also to harrowing encounters with those intimately involved in some of the era's darkest activities.Rich and resonant, poignant and personal, Ever is a Long Time reveals a side of Mississippi that has never been fully seen before, and gives a haunting lookat a time that most of us would like to forget but whose legacy still reverberates today.Shipping and Returns
