A young and promising tennis player Guy Haynes meets one day on a train a very strange and mysterious subject - Bruno Anthony. The stranger shows astonishing knowledge (based on gossip) of the personal affairs of Guy, who is in love with Ann Morton, the daughter of a prominent senator, and is just on his way to his current wife, Miriam, to negotiate a divorce. Bruno, in a fit of frankness, sets out to Guy his old idea about (murder crosswise): he suggests Guy to kill his wife, and he, in turn, will kill Bruno's father, whom the latter desperately hates. In this way, alibis can be provided to interested parties, and the real killers will be deprived of any apparent motive. Guy indignantly rejects Bruno's proposal. However, having arrived to his wife Miriam, he discovers that she has changed her mind about getting a divorce, wanting to annoy her husband as much as possible. Meanwhile, Bruno is already beginning to act.
