Jane Holman, driving her car with her two sons Tom and Gunny, accidentally hits a drifter named Jack McCloud, breaking his leg. Feeling sorry for him, Jane invites Jack and her dog Betty Jane to stay at her house until his leg recovers. After some difficulty adapting to the new lifestyle, Jack discovers that he is loved by his family and that everyone would like him to stay. When he begins teaching baseball to Tom, who lost his father in the Korean War, a very strong bond develops between the two. Meanwhile, the Gunny is convinced there's more than meets the eye between Jack and Betty Jane, and he's determined to find out.
